Two prominent contemporary Northwest Coast First Nations artists come together once again to explore themes of ancestry, tradition friendship and family through contemporary abstractions using paper, wood, glass, metal and serigraphy.
Coast Salish artist Chris Paul and Tlingit artist Mark Preston once again bring fresh, insightful and playful pieces that play around the ideas of the collision of traditional and contemporary worlds. They articulate new themes through their diverse and contemporary use of materials and also celebrate an enduring bond of friendship in the creation of this exhibition of masterworks. Some works in the exhibition will reference historical pieces; others will offer a contemporary, personal take.

“Living in two world-views was once a difficult thing to endure.  Now it has afforded me absolute freedom from both worlds, and the knowledge to understand and appreciate them both.”
-Mark Preston

“The art I have is something I take care of rather than hold on to.  We carry it, we breathe life into it, and then we pass it on to the next generations.  For my family I have carried the art, inspired my children, walked with them and have been inspired.”

-Chris Paul

Israel (Toto) Berriel, is a traditional Afro-Cuban percussionist and vocalist from Matanzas, Cuba. Toto began his professional music career at the young age of 16 in Los Yumurinos, a group formed by the children of the famous groups Los Muñequitos de Matanzas and AfroCuba de Matanzas, two well-recognized traditional Afro-Cuban groups.
In 1988 he joined AfroCuba de Matanzas. He worked with AfroCuba de Matanzas for two years until he was invited to join the world’s best-known Rumba group, Los Muñequitos de Matanzas. Toto worked with the Los Muñequitos for twelve years learning the entire Afro-Cuban repertoire.
A naturally gifted vocalist with a distinctive sound, his easy charm, charisma and his Cuban warmth, make Toto an exceptional and approachable music teacher. His classes are both comfortable and challenging; and the combination makes for a productive working environment. Although Toto is deeply rooted in the Afro-Cuban traditions, he is also comfortable in different musical environment such as jazz, modern music, soul and funk amongst others.
Toto has toured worldwide in Canada, United States, Mexico, Colombia, Costa Rica, Brazil, Spain, Germany, Italy, Switzerland, France and Korea, singing, playing and teaching in various workshops.

Weedie Braimah was born in Ghana, had his first drum before he turned 2, and hasn’t let the drums out of his sight since! He has studied with every African master drummer of note – Mor Thiam, Baba Camara, Mamady Keita, just to name a few. A maverick performer of the highest caliber, Braimah has an almost insatiable knack to draw the entire audience into his groove, zigzagging through Africa on a breathtaking rhythmic roller coaster.

Amadou Kouyate is the 150th generation of the Kouyate lineage and has studied and performed Manding music since the age of three years old. Amadou is a dynamic djembe and koutiro drummer. He also plays the 21-string kora, which he learned first with his father, Djimo Kouyate and other master Diali –oral historians/musicians– of Manding tradition in West Africa. Amadou has dedicated his life to the task of become an ambassador of African culture to the world. The catalyst for such a responsibility is the passion he has for reconnecting those of the African Diasporas to one another. His repertoire ranges from traditional songs from the 13th century to contemporary original compositions incorporating blues and jazz riffs.

Through kayaking, our goals are to build community, provide a inspiring one-day kayaking experiences and raise money to support charities who drive research and prevention of cancer.

Each summer, in cities throughout Canada and the United States, paddlers - both beginners and experienced - climb in to boats and cross waterways, bays, lakes and channels for two reasons: an excuse to have a great day in the outdoors with some amazing people, and to be part of the solution: fund the research and prevention that leads to cures for all types of cancers.

Eric Bibb’s father, Leon Bibb, certainly helped his son dig a little deeper. An acclaimed singer in stage musicals and a senior figure on the New York folk scene of the 1960s, Leon gave his son his first guitar when he was seven, and introduced him to a who’s-who of musical icons. Eric’s godfather was actor singer and activist Paul Robeson; his uncle was jazz pianist and composer John Lewis. Family friends included Odetta, Pete Seeger and Josh White.

A professional player at 16, playing in the house band for his father’s television talent show, Something New, Eric went on to study (psychology and Russian) at Columbia University, but "after a while it just didn't make much sense; I didn't understand why I was at this Ivy League school with all these kids who didn't know anything about what I knew about," he says now. Aged 19, he left for Paris, where a meeting with American studio guitarist Mickey Baker focused his interest in blues guitar.
A few years later he moved to Sweden and settled in Stockholm, where he found a creative environment that, oddly, reminded him of his teenage days in Greenwich Village. He made a handful of albums, starting in 1972, and began meeting and playing with local musicians as well as newcomers from all over the world. He laughs: “There was a budding world music scene going on, long before it became a marketing concept."

His breakthrough album, Good Stuff, was released in 1997 and led to Eric signing to a British label, which in turn released Me to You, featuring appearances from some of his personal heroes, among them Pops and Mavis Staples and Taj Mahal.

The album furthered Bibb's international reputation and was followed by tours of the UK, the United States, Canada, France, Sweden and Germany. And so it went through the 90s and the first decade of the new century — he made consistently good records, and built audiences from Stockholm to Sydney, Vancouver to Vienna, Paris to Peoria, New Orleans to Newcastle, and from B.B. King’s club in New York to the Bluebird Café in Nashville.
Been greeted like a tramp, greeted like a star
From Albert Hall to rundown bars
I’ve seen it all — in my time
— Eric Bibb
A distinguished history
Over the course of many album releases over the years Bibb has been nominated for multiple Blues Music Awards in several categories. In addition to the Grammy-nominated Shakin’ a Tailfeather children’s album (with Taj Mahal and Linda Tillery and the Cultural Heritage Choir), other noted albums included Friends, which featured Odetta, Charlie Musselwhite, Guy Davis and Mahal as special guests. Two collaborations with his father (who lives in Vancouver) were A Family Affair and Praising Peace: A Tribute to Paul Robeson, which Stony Plain released in 2006. More recent was his 2010 Booker’s Guitar, a tribute to blues pioneer Bukka White, on which he played White’s steel-bodied National guitar.
A four-decade career, 35 albums, countless radio and television shows and non-stop touring have given Eric Bibb a world view that’s tempered by curiosity and compassion, and the ability to see himself in other peoples’ shoes.

Gotta help one another
Like the ol’ folks used to do
A hand is on the gate
Let a brother walk through
— Eric Bibb
That’s certainly the hallmark of his records for Stony Plain, the Edmonton, Canada-based international roots music label.
An Eric Bibb performance — and his recent Dixie Frog/Stony Plain recording and the one to come later this year — is an enriching experience, both musically and spiritually.
Music is more than a style or a fashion
It’s ‘bout the swing, the soul and the passion
If I feel it — that’s good enough for me
— Eric Bibb
Michael Jerome Browne
"...one of the finest musicians who is well versed in so many interrelated genres when it comes to roots, Americana, blues, Cajun, you name it, Michael has got it under his belt in a big way and instruments in his backpack... Any chance I get to hear Michael and then play with him is a chance I'll leap at."
-Eric Bibb, interview with Holger Petersen (Talking Music)
"An exceptional songwriter and singer."
- John McLaughlin (The Province, Vancouver)
"A roots music expert."
-Roger Levesque (Edmonton Journal)
“A multi-instrumentalist and singer of vast talent."
- Brad Wheeler (The Globe and Mail- Toronto)
Michael Jerome Browne, Canadian Folk Music Awards Solo Artist of the Year 2012 & 2008, Maple Blues Acoustic Artist Award Winner, Kerrville (Texas) New Folk Finalist, Three time Juno Award Nominee in both the roots and blues categories. Michael is a multi-instrumentalist, a songwriter, and a living encyclopedia of American Roots music.

Whether he's gliding a slide across his national guitar, pulling his bow over the fiddle strings to play a lively Cajun waltz, or frailing away on his gourd banjo Michael's passion and virtuosity always shine through. In the true tradition of folk music, his performances inspire us to see the interconnections between the many cultures and influences that gave birth to American Roots Music. Gospel, Blues, Old-Time, Country, Soul and Cajun, expect to hear all of this and more from a performer who's been called a street-smart archivist and an absolute treasure.
Born in South Bend, Indiana, Michael is the son of English professors whose love of music and poetry inspired them to take their nine year old son to the great jazz, blues and folk clubs in their adopted home of Montreal. By the age of fourteen, MJB was already a regular on the vibrant folk and coffee house scene adding banjo, fiddle, and mandolin to his masterful command of all variety of guitars and harmonica.

A musician's musician, when he isn't performing his own material he is in demand backing up and recording with artists such as: Eric Bibb, Jordan Officer, and Susie Arioli.

Pacific Peoples’ Partnership (PPP) is hosting the 7th annual One Wave Festival on Friday September 19th and Saturday September 20th. One Wave is PPP’s inspired action to celebrate and honor connections to the Pacific while building identity and community. The purpose of One Wave is to engage individuals to create one movement amongst all peoples to address issues including: cultural integrity, language loss, climate change, ocean pollution, food security, Indigenous identity, racism, and long-term effects of colonialism.

These issues will be addressed at the free-admission Changemakers’ Summit on Friday September 19th co-hosted by the Centre for Asia Pacific Initiatives, and held at the University of Victoria Cadboro Commons from 1:00-3:30 PM. A panel presentation entitled, “Puppets, Performers, & Social Change” featuring changemakers such as Sutrisno Hartana, Wendy Passmore, and Jeremy Bally, will explore the role of the arts in acts of social transformation.

“PPP recognizes the need for social discourse around these issues through creative means,” said April Ingham, director of Pacific Peoples’ Partnership. “Our mission is to engage, educate, and activate.”

After the presentation, attendees will break out in groups led by various non-government officials (NGOs) including World Fisheries Trust, Cascadian Crusaders, and Raincoast Conservation Foundation, to discuss ways of becoming active in creating social change. The Puppets for Peace will also play a main role in this event with a puppet-making and performance workshop.

More free-admission workshops and performances will take place on Saturday September 20th in the Pacific Arts and Culture Showcase from 12:00-6:00 PM in Centennial Square. The day’s events will feature live music, spoken word, and dance performances from the North and South Pacific. There will be face painting, chalk art, storytelling, and various other interactive arts performances. Costumed performers (Cascadian Crusaders) and walking stilt puppets (Puppets for Peace) will also be highlights at the event. Local NGOs will be present in the vendor village to promote their respective missions. Kids and families are welcome.

For more information about this event, please contact PPP’s Media Relations representative Kat Zimmer at 250-381-4131. Currently, One Wave is seeking more volunteers, vendors, and artists to participate in this multi-cultural event. If you are interested, please email info@pacificpeoplespartnership.org.

PPP is a non-profit organization and registered charity that, for nearly 40 years, has supported the aspirations of South Pacific islanders for peace, justice, health, and environmental sustainability. PPP runs programs around sustainable development, capacity building, cultural exchanges, knowledge sharing, and global leadership. PPP has been recognized and supported by environmentalists such as David Suzuki, and continues to work in partnership with many other individuals and organizations.

Join Nick La Riviere (harmonizer trombone, vocals), Aidan Miller (piano), Reuben Wier (guitar), Sean Drabitt (bass), and Damian Graham (drums) for an exciting night of all original music.

Nick is one of Victoria’s busiest musicians. He’s played with touring bands that have taken him across Canada, the USA, Mexico, and as far as Germany. Now Nick has been working hard on composing, arranging, and recording his own new compositions for an album that will be released next year. The album features music in many genres - rather like the mix of gigs Nick plays with other people’s bands as a sideman. Everything from pop, soul, straight up jazz, and more. His variety of compositions have been compared to artists like Ben Folds, Paul Simon, Billy Joel, Sam Cooke.

Join the band on September 27th for a sneak preview of some of the music that will appear on the new album. The 5 piece band faithfully attempts to reproduce the big multi-layered sound of the album - especially using Nick's programmable harmonizer to create the sound of the full horn section.

Opening guest: Geoff Lundstrom - http://www.geoffreylundstrom.com

Reservations are highly recommended - email info@hermannsjazz.com to claim your table and guarantee entrance if it sells out. Cover is $20 at the door, or $15 for students, members of UJAM and VJS.

They’re creepy and they’re kooky, mysterious and spooky. Everyone’s favourite family comes to spooky and spectacular life in an all new story, based on the bizarre and beloved characters created by Charles Addams. Featuring all of your favourite ghouls – Gomez (Roderick Glanville), Morticia (Francesca Bitonti), Uncle Fester (Darren Rathgaber), Grandma (Gouda Gabor), Wednesday (Rachel Paxton), Pugsley, and, of course, Lurch. Wednesday Addams has fallen for the wrong type—he’s sweet, smart and from a respectable “warm-blooded" family. Nothing changes a family more—more hilariously, more musically or more enjoyably—than a daughter in love. The magnificently macabre Addams are put to the test, hurling them into a night that will change their lives forever. Directed by Pat Rundell with choreography by Tara Britt and musical direction by Stephanie Sartore, The Addams Family is a devilish delight for all ages. Come meet the family. We’ll leave the lights off for you.

Makana

Described as “dazzling” by the New York Times, Makana is an internationally acclaimed guitarist, singer, and composer who is widely known for lending his musical talent for social change. His guitar playing has been featured on three Grammy-nominated albums, including the soundtrack of the Academy-Award winning film “The Descendants”. In 2011, at the apex of the “Occupy” movement, Makana’s song We Are the Many went viral on YouTube garnering more than half a million views and was coined the “Occupy Anthem” by Rolling Stone Magazine. His performance of the song at an APEC World Leaders’ Dinner hosted by the Obamas also went viral and became the #1 news story on Yahoo worldwide for two days, garnering appearances on CNN, BBC, ABC, Democracy Now!, Sean Hannity and other major news outlets. Makana’s captivating and wide-ranging performance style has led him to share the stage with Jason Mraz and Jack Johnson, open for music legends Sting, Carlos Santana and Elvis Costello, and perform in venues ranging from Asian and European opera houses to The White House.

Born and raised in Hawai’i, Makana grew up on the shores of Waikiki amid the likes of legend Don Ho and young Elvis-impersonator Bruno Mars. Makana- whose name means “a gift given freely”- began singing when he was seven years-old, took up ‘ukulele at nine and began learning the ancient art of slack key at eleven. By fourteen, he was performing professionally, and before long playing five nights a week. His reputation as the youngest master of slack key spread like molten volcanic lava throughout the islands.

A protégé of the Hawaiian Slack Key Guitar legends, including Bobby Moderow Jr. and the late master Uncle Sonny Chillingworth, Makana has dedicated his life to perpetuating as well as evolving the traditional Hawaiian art form. Slack key or Ki Ho’alu, over 200 years old and indigenous to Hawai’i, was created by ‘ohana (families) on the different islands as a very personal folk music expression of their beautiful surroundings and way of life. The style is characterized by “slacking” the strings to open chords, thus freeing the hands to alter the sound whilst self-accompanying with a triad of alternating bass patterns, faux rhythms and sweet melodies evocative of island atmospheres. Think “three guitars in one!” From this tradition Makana has evolved his own dynamic, high-octane style, coined “Slack Rock”: slack key infused with elements of bluegrass, rock, blues and raga. Makana’s playing has garnered praise from such guitar luminaries as Kirk Hammett (Metallica) and Pepe Romero (Spanish Flamenco Master). A contributor to the 2007 Grammy-nominated “Hawaiian Slack Key Kings Vol. I” and 2009 Grammy-nominated “Hawaiian Slack Key Kings Vol II”, Makana is considered one of the “greatest living players” (Esquire Magazine) whose “instrumental brilliance bears comparison with the work of such groundbreaking acoustic guitarists as John Fahey and Michael Hedges” (Maui News).

The focus of Makana’s art is to celebrate the beauty of tradition while exploring new, relevant perceptions, sounds and themes. In his music he often honors his forebears, the vintage Hawaiian music legends as well as the rock poet idols of the 60s, paying homage to the kupuna (elders) who carry within their Beings the cultural wisdom passed down through generations.

Makana is also very active in building and nurturing community and awareness in the fields of food and nutrition, land, social engineering strategies, health and spiritual growth. His hobbies include growing food and sowing clarity through philosophy on his blog, Mind Mints.
Makana’s latest album Ripe was produced by multi-platinum producer Ron Nevison (The Who, Led Zeppelin, Rolling Stones) and renowned producer Mitchell Froom (Crowded House, Elvis Costello, Bonnie Raitt), with arrangements by Grammy-award winning keyboardist, composer, and arranger Jeff Bova (Celine Dion, Michael Jackson, Eric Clapton). With music ranging from Hawaiian classics to sexy love ballads to songs of resistance, Makana is not only keeping Hawai’i’s musical traditions alive– he’s evolving them.

Each year St. Barnabas Anglican Church invites representative groups from the best of Victoria's amateur classical and choral music scene to participate in our St. Barnabas Sunday Concert Series. The purpose of the concerts are twofold: to support local amateur musicians and provide them with a platform to perform. The concerts are deliberately inexpensive ($10 at the door) and all proceeds go to the musicians.

On Sunday March 16th at 3 pm Josh Layne will perform music from Europe, Russia - Mussorgsky, Prokofiev, France - Godefroid, Germany - Bach, Beethoven, and more. Plus at least one of his own compositions.

Harpist/composer Josh Layne has been called a 'harp genius' and a 'consummate musician'. As a performer he has given solo recitals across Canada, the US, and in Europe as well as giving performances of five of the major harp concertos. Josh made his South American debut this year in Brazil at the Rio Harp Festival to rave reviews.

His performance of the cadenza from Handel's Concerto for Harp has received over 100,000 views on YouTube. Josh has been praised for both his virtuosity and the sensitivity of his playing. In the spring of 2013 he released his fourth CD of solo harp music. Called Passage: music for solo harp it features three of Josh's original compositions.
