Curated by Marcus Milwright (Department of Art History and Visual Studies)

Legacy Maltwood (at the Mearns Centre – McPherson Library)

See Library hours

This exhibition marks the centenary of the start of of the "Great War" with a cross cultural focus on the visual and material culture of World War I. The exhibition includes books, prints, and personal objects drawn from the Legacy Art Galleries, the UVic Libraries (Special Collections and Archives), and private collections in Victoria. These objects present visual manifestations of the war in the theatres of conflict in Europe and the Middle East as well as the production and consumption of art and literature in Canada between 1914 and 1918. Visitors will also see unique examples of European and Middle Eastern "trench art", a term which refers to objects made by soldiers in times of conflict as well as those made of spent artillery shells and other military equipment by civilian artisans after the cessation of hostilities. Another central part of the exhibit is the so-called "J.M. Diary." The curator is inviting the public to solve the mystery of who illustrated this fascinating first-hand visual account.

The Civic Orchestra of Victoria, currently in its 31st season, is pleased to announce its 16th annual sing-along production of Handel's Messiah , in conjunction with the Victoria Philharmonic Choir. This community concert is a highly-anticipated Christmas tradition, and promises to be a festive, fun-filled event for Vancouver Islanders of all ages and singing levels. Non-singers will also enjoy the energy and sounds in the hall as the orchestra and chorus/audience unite to perform one of the greatest choral works ever written.

For this performance, the Civic Orchestra will be led by guest conductor Peter Butterfield, an accomplished vocalist and choral conductor who currently directs the Victoria Philharmonic Choir and teaches Senior Choral Music at St. Michaels University School.

This year's production of Handel's Messiah will be particularly special in the way that it will incorporate an even wider selection than usual of Victoria's music community. Two young student conductors, Nathan Jacklin and Evan Hesketh, will have the opportunity to conduct the orchestra for a portion of the evening. Also, each of Messiah 's arias will be sung by a different soloist, all of whom will bring their own interpretation to a portion of Handel's classic work. These eleven soloists are up-and-coming local singers, ranging from young music students to professionals. This carefully-curated assortment of soloists will ensure that the 2014 Messiah is a true community event, setting it apart from other productions.

The Civic Orchestra of Victoria's 16th annual sing-along Messiah will be a uniquely inclusive event, and the orchestra looks forward to welcoming all community members who wish to take part.

Steampunk is the collision of history, technology, imagination, and attitude. Nineteenth-century sensibilities with impossible Jules-Verne-inspired technology. Teak-panelled computers, corsets and jetpacks, top hats and rayguns.

Victoria, British Columbia, will host an art-happening of steampunk art, tech, fashion, music, architecture, and story.

The $50 weekend pass gives you access both Saturday and Sunday to steampunk jewelers, tinkerers, corsetieres, milliners, leather and glassworkers, artisans and anachronists. Additionally there are continuous panel discussions on costuming, history, literary readings, and prop-making.  Your weekend pass also  admits you to the Saturday Evening Steampunk Cabaret Burlesque, a dance party to the haunted gypsy folk antics of Tarran the Tailor and the boisterous Bučan Bučan.

Not your typical "con" or convention, the Dominion of Canada's premiere steampunk event, VSE is more intimate; a living art-show with evocative venues, and more oriented around conversation and sharing in an authentic Victorian atmosphere.

Through kayaking, our goals are to build community, provide a inspiring one-day kayaking experiences and raise money to support charities who drive research and prevention of cancer.

Each summer, in cities throughout Canada and the United States, paddlers - both beginners and experienced - climb in to boats and cross waterways, bays, lakes and channels for two reasons: an excuse to have a great day in the outdoors with some amazing people, and to be part of the solution: fund the research and prevention that leads to cures for all types of cancers.
